The Building SAFER Communities initiative is based on the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) five key alcohol policy interventions. Over the next three years, this initiative will be rolled out in 10 communities across Ireland- Sligo, Letterkenny, Monaghan, Drogheda, Ballymun, Canal Communities, Celbridge, Leixlip, Listowel and Cork City, supported by local and regional Drug and Alcohol Task Forces. The SAFER package has five interventions:

  • Strengthen restrictions on alcohol availability
  • Advance and enforce drink driving counter measures
  • Facilitate access to screening, brief interventions and treatment
  • Enforce bans or comprehensive restrictions on alcohol advertising, sponsorship, and promotion
  • Raise prices on alcohol through excise taxes and pricing policies

As part of the SAFER initiative we invite you to have your say about Alcohol in your Community by taking our short survey SAFER Survey Sligo. Survey closes 24th April 2026.
