HSE Media Release

Sligo City is fortunate in that it attracts many festivals and celebrations throughout the year which benefit our local economy greatly. However, the extent to which some engage with alcohol can create difficulties for others. The Sligo Healthy Cities project, in conjunction with the HSE North Western Region Drug & Alcohol Task Force, are offering everyone the opportunity to have their say through a brief online survey attached in the link above. The information from the survey will help to develop a five year strategy to reduce alcohol related harm in Sligo City.

The Sligo Healthy Cities projects, and its partner agencies, are keen to protect and promote Sligo’s nightlife and events while recognising that there are ways to socialise in a safer way. The harmful effects of alcohol are well documented and visible, with increased numbers presenting at emergency departments at weekends, increased alcohol related crime, harmful effects on others and long-term negative health effects such as cancer.

As such, the HSE North Western Region Drug & Alcohol Task Force in partnership with the Statutory, Voluntary and Community sector have undertaken the task to develop an alcohol harm reduction strategy for Sligo City and want to engage the public in this discussion and debate on both the issues, and the possible solutions. Sean O’Connor, who is the Co-ordinator of the HSE North West Regional Drug & Alcohol Task Force explained “There are strategies which can be put in place that are shown to reduce the amount of alcohol related harm without interfering with anyone’s enjoyment of a night out. We are hoping to enlist enough support from local people and local agencies to implement an appropriate strategy for Sligo City.”

We would appreciate it if you could complete the online survey or
if you would prefer the survey by email or post please contact the HSE North West Regional Drug & Alcohol Task Force office on 071 9151520.

Deadline for submissions is Tuesday the 14th of March 2017.
